    September: SHOUT OUT for Improvement!

This month we're asking for your help on self-improvement. Alyssa Gregory reminded us that September is Self-improvement Month. What do you plan to improve or have you already improved on during September? Please share your ideas on either personal or business self-improvement. (I plan to do a better job of staying ahead of my deadlines! )

I plan on setting more realistic goals. I can't count the number of sites that I "suddenly had a great idea", quickly purchased a domain name, and cranked out some pieces of code before sitting down and planning it out and realizing that either the task was 5x more difficult than I thought or that there was already a dozen sites doing the exact same thing. All I'm left with is a useless domain name and wasted time.

I'm taking on a new motto for my web development - slow and steady wins the race. Some sites I created last year and haven't been doing too much with are now starting to bring in some income, so I'm going to expand on that. No more instant-success ideas.

I plan on managing my time/tasks better. Somehow, I can't seem to make a top priority list and end up doing everything and finishing nothing. Or when I'm hooked up with something, I can't stop, spend too much time on it and tend to neglect other priorities. Bah!

I plan on improving my website! I have not had the time to do anything to it in months, I promised myself to find the time to update it more often!

I'm always looking to improve on everything I do.

I'd like to learn more on guitar, learn some Debussy on the piano, knock my Rubik's cube solving time (current time is 1m 56s), write some physics programs that I've wanted to write in C++, pass my driving test (1 week from now!), get a car.

Oh, and improve on my current record of staying alive - currently 6446 days, but I'm beating that every day!

I'm trying to have a consistent sleeping pattern. I just can't seem to get my act together in this regard. I sometimes stay up until 9am and get up at 5pm. That's sick.

I need to get to bed earlier and get to work earlier to prepare for the day ahead. I also need to stop wasting time here when I should be doing other work-related stuff.

So far time management and organisation look pretty high up on the common list.

Just a suggestion. The last thing I do each day is to schedule the next day's work. That way, I'm not wasting time in the morning doing it and my days starts off with knowing what needs to be done. I'm a big procrastinator and planning this way is a big help!

    Great idea!

I do need to get to sleep earlier to be honest. Back to education, and waking up at 7am REALLY doesn't suit me one bit (Im more of a 11.30am - 12pm kinda person).

Yeah, I try to do that! The thing is, with my job I need to schedule like a week in advance, and that is taxing for a procrastinator like me.

I'm thinking of getting this t-shirt:

    Ditto...

If I could somehow get up early, regardless of when I go to sleep, I would fall asleep early too. But I don't have the will apparently...

Not sure. Probably finish some ideas that I have. I get disheartened very easily, and my "to do" list is a mile long.

I'm terrible, my domain name registrant account is full of dead ideas and broken dreams. Boo hoo.

I'm new to web developing. So I can hand code XHTML and CSS OK now. But it would be faster if I did it in Dreamweaver. Note to self: learn Dreamweaver thoroughly. But then Dreamweaver integrates well with Fireworks wireframes and other stuff. Further note to self.

Now I need some pics for various sites. Buy decent camera. Note to self: learn to use camera properly. Ah...pics still need tweaking. Note to self: learn more Photoshop techniques.

Now where did I put all those books on PHP, JavaScript and Flash?

As we all know there is always something new to learn in the ever changing field of IT. On the professional side I maintain a list of skills that I need to acquire or improve upon then work on them one or two at a time until I feel that I have mastered them, preferrably by applying those new skills to my work. This next year I need to work on web site features like social networking and multimedia, and, as always, getting more clients.

On the personal side I need to read more, practice my guitar and get some freelance articles published.
