Great SEO Results. Share the glory!

    Share the glory

    Hello All:

Recently I optimized a client’s site using a lot of what I have learned here on SitePoint.

I used Overture's key word tool:
    http://inventory.overture.com/d/sear...ry/suggestion/

to get a relative idea on the number of times different key word phrases were searched for, and then determine what key word phrases were worth our client using.

Then I optimized the site to rank in a pretty competitive category.

Here are some initial results (we are only a few weeks into it and are waiting for other search engines to crawl the site) :

    On MSN results went from:
    Keyword Phrase Singular = #55 to # 14
Keyword Phrase Plural = Not in the first 100 (stayed the same)

    On AOL results went from:
    Keyword Phrase Singular = #35 to #4
Keyword Phrase Plural = Not in the first 100 to #6

    On Excite results went from:
Keyword Phrase Singular = # 10 to #19 -(Okay becuase of the next result.)
Keyword Phrase Plural = Not in First 100 to # 27

Yahoo: Stayed the same. They already had a good ranking.

I am sure others have had similar success or better. I was just excited and thought I’d share the success and attribute it to what was learned here on SitePoint.

    Interesting note:
Lycos dropped the site completely. I am pretty sure it was because the additional number of keywords was considered spamming (though I kept the keyword density around 3%). This is a bummer; the attempt was to add enough keywords to finally get the client’s site in the right category, but not to go overboard into producing false results.

This is alright however, since the other search engines have a higher weight of importance for our clients.

Whahoo. I'm feeling good. Probably the Espresso from this morning. -- Pretend it's Espresso.

    Best Regards,
    worksdev

I doubt lycos dropped your site for the reason specified. Remember Lycos is powered by Fast.

Really? I know it is hard to guess, but do you have any idea as to why?

As far as I know, I was carefull not even to come near spamming. Keyword density was the only thing I thought came close. Keyword density is such a balance, I thought maybe I tipped it.

I even dropped the site mirrorring that the client site had for having a shorter URL option.

    That's great worksdev!

One question for you though...do you group all of your key words/phrases together, or do you separate them with commas? I've seen both methods recommended, and have yet to figure out just what works best!

Keep up the good work and congrats again!

    Chances are it wasn't dropped.

Neither. Seriously don't worry about it, most search engines don't use meta tags anymore.

Aspen, you are right, I noticed that it is still indexed but not in the top 150. It was only at number 38 before.

Do you think I should be worried about this?

Well it could just be temporary, but Lycos/Fast aren't exactly traffic powerhouses anyways. I would definitely wait atleast a week before deciding what to do.

Also it may not have been anything you did. When you get low in the rankings the differences between sites are likely minor, so a small change in either direction could yield a large change in rankings. Often times it will be easier to jump from number 100 to number 50 than from number 2 to number 1.

    Archbob,

I hope you do not mind my not sharing the keyword phrases.

If it were my own site I would gladly. Since this was for a client of the agency I work for, I cannot (both the agency and our client have issues with privacy).

I know it is hard to verify the results I posted without the keywords. My point in posting these was out of an enthusiasm to share with the community that I have gained so much knowledge and skill from.

It was bragging in the sense of saying, “Hey guys, look what happened today. Isn’t it great?”

    Best Regards,
    worksdev
