    Is this just spam?

    Hi guys/gals.

I received this letter today for a domain hosted with either 123-reg or godaddy.

Is this just spam? Should I just bin it?

Think it is (in fact, pretty damn sure it is), just checking

Yes, looks like many I have received where they aim to get you to renew domains via them instead of your current Nominet agent. They usually turn up well before the renewal is due, beating any reminder from your usual company.

IMO it can be safely ignored unless you wish to pay more than necessary to someone whose business methods you despise!

Wow, I have never heard of similar emails in the past. Anyways, I believe these can be safely ignored.

Well, I did recieve a whois lookup for this address a few days before via email. My address is on said whois record, so that's why I'm assuming.

It is a scam, it's basically where they try to trick people into signing their domains over to the other registrar at a much higher price than normal registrars and they usually prevent you moving away from them, I really wish the people who send out those letters would be dealt with by the police because it's an obvious attempt at defrauding people out of their domains or trying to trick them with an official looking letter, I know lots of people who have either almost or have fallen for it.

Yes that is Spam. I have had clients receive those and they call me in a panic. That is all those types of companies do, is pray on domain name owners/ web site owners that really don't a whole lot about how the web works. So they think they are going to lose their domain name and just pay the nomimal fees. Its sad, but that's why people need to rely on trusted web professionals to keep that kind of stuff at bay.

Sorry but how exactly do "trusted web professionals" keep that stuff at bay? We have no control over the mail system or the criminals who post out those messages, you are saying that we have some sort of power to prevent people getting those messages which is wrong.

No I'm not saying we have any power to prevent our clients from receiving that junk. I'm saying as a web professional, you need to have a good enough relationship with your clients that when and if they do receive that type of spam, they feel like they can come to you as a trustworthy resource to tell them its spam and to not act on their claims.

Yes, we have clients that receive garbage like that all the time.

I agree that you should communicate to your clients to ask you about these items. Usually, they are ploys to get inexperienced businesses to fork out $$.

A friend of mine recently received a similar letter. Not sure if it is the same company that sent it but luckily he came to me prior to doing anything.

I have never heard of anyone falling for this but having received a letter like this myself a few years back I know how convincing they can be.

If you receive any letters about domain renewals you can largely ignore them UNLESS they are from your current registrar OR if there is mention of the registrar transferring all of their domains to the other registrar due to ICANN rulings (like what happened with South American Domains, Simply Named and Tahoe Domains recently and of course more famously register fly a couple of years ago).
