    Thumbs up Frequently designed Layouts

    Hi,
I am a novice designer and want to know about some good sites from where I can get some concepts of layout i.e. Ideas about the layouts. Also I have started with the process of wireframing a web site and If any body can help me in telling how can I choose color combinations for the web sites i.e. the colors that could go best with header and footer etc.

    Thanks
    Ashish

Check out some Web design galleries for inspiration about layout.

as far as color is concerned, it's very subjective, and remember that color is relative. Your color palette should also be appropriate, if it's a dating website you should consider going with pinks and white (but that's just one option).

my advice is check out some web design books and try copying some designs that you find that you like. However, DO NOT claim those as your own or put them in your portfolio, it's just an exercise.

Here are some of my favorite books.

    Hi,
Thanks for the help but generally I use to get stucked myself in the color combinations, i.e. which color goes with which color or which color is best suitable with a particular color.

How can I find that?? and what would be the best way to learn and be proficient in web design...................

    Thanks
    Ashish

ashishmittal, if you have trouble with color scheming I would use a product like ColorSchemer Studio, I have the same problem you have but it lets you build up a color palette and find contrasting colors well... it's worth downloading and trying out to see if you feel it's suitable for your needs (its a pretty cheap buy too).

Other then that theres lots of ways to become proficient in web design, if your problem is the code side, check the sitepoint references, if it's the "design" and layout aspect (as in where you should place everything and what you should install), theres lots of good books on design patterns, I personally love "The Design of Sites", you would also find a book on usability a good purchase like Don't Make Me Think! or Homepage Usability (Jakob Nielsen).

It's difficult really to give you color suggestion, because to me it all comes down to what the site is about.

Generally I start off with trying to use a combination of colours that compliment the logo if there is one. If there isn't, then sites like:

    http://www.colourlovers.com/palettes/top
    http://www.colorschemer.com/

have a selection of colourschemes you can pick from.

I like this site too :-)

and this site may give you some inspiration as well:

Get inspirations from things around you. You have to see things from a designer's point of view...visit css galleries like CSS Mania to get idea of colors, view different inspirational galleries and lastly if you still stuck than surely color schemer surely helps
