What is your favorite/most useful instant messenger?

I cut my teeth on ICQ and didn't like AIM. But it seemed like I had more friends on AIM, so I slowly switched. I've not used ICQ in quite a while...but might like to go back to it. I have MSN, but really don't like it, but have some work contacts who use it, so I usually have it running too.

Anyway, what is your favorite instand messenger and why?

I hate Windows Messenger (as it is so called in Windows XP). Only thing is, ya have to do up a special command to uninstall it...which I just happen to know...

    Code:
    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
So if ya don't like Windows Messenger and have Windows XP (if you have another version of Windows, that command may screw up your computer), just put that into the RUN dialog box.

I mainly use AIM though. Used Y! Messanger for a while, hated that...AIM seems to be to me the most advanced...hated ICQ because of that longass number ya had to remember

I use aim the most. the one thing I like about Y! mesenger that aim doesnt do is that if someone sends you a message when youre not online you get the message the next time you sign on.
From here on, it's instinctual...even straight roads meander.

    neat.

but since i use messenger [i got bored with icq etc...i still have to reinstall them since i got osme contacts on there] i prefer playing with the registry and disabling messenger to run with MS outlook or outlook express. No leetness intended.

I use Trillian for my ICQ, AIM and MSN account.

Personally, you can like what you like, and hate what you hate, it doesn't really matter, as you have to use what the person you want to talk to uses.

I used to use only ICQ, everyone I knew used ICQ. But now that I've moved it has become evident that everyone here uses AIM. So for me it's:

    Old friends -> ICQ
    New friends -> AIM

    Hence Trillian.

And I only have MSN because of my MS Passport. I find MSN relative useless.

With features such as offline messages & video chat, Yahoo! Messenger is certainly one of the best IM available today

I use Miranda and I am completely satisfied (it's a free ICQ clone). I'm the one who hates IM programs, I prefer e-mail or SMS .

I will never use windows messenger, their little monopolistic ploy with it on XP just pisses me off (there are other ways to remove it by the way - though they require multiple steps).

I use AIM, I've tried ICQ but in addition to the numbers I don't like the clutter, it seems too complicated. IMO an IM program should be relatively spartan. All you need is a buddy list and a message box.

LoL, I am on Wayne's list

I have ICQ, AIM and MSN always open.

I would use Trillian, but my ICQ list is over 600 contacts big, and I also need Hebrew with it, and I just dont like how Trillian organizes my contact list (I like how ICQ does it - first online contacts, than it orders them by availability).

I found Trillian a bit buggy after a while, but that was about 6 months back, maybe Ill give it a whirl again.

For now, I use MSN,ICQ and Y!(Y! just for email notification).

Lots of you have said which one or ones you use...but which is your #1 favorite? What features make it your favorite?

One thing I used to love about ICQ (and it's still a feature I'm sure) is that I could send a message to someone even if they were not online. When they logged on, they'd get it and be able to respond back really quickly, whether I was online or not. (I think I'm gonna dload the newest ICQ and give it another whirl.)

I primarily use AIM now because most of the people I know are on it. It is my primary chat client, I guess. But, like I said, I've gotten a lot of contacts from work related stuff on MSN (which I really don't like that much.) So Trillian may be the way to go for me.

Is it pretty easy and straight forward to use? Can someone give a screenshot? How would a trillian user contact another trillian user? Would they have to use ICQ/AIM/MSN/Y! to be able to use it too?

ICQ - Message History, Stateless Messaging, Plugins.

All other IM's pale in comparison. My Second favorite would be MSN. If it had message history then I would use it more.

Yahoo and AIM have none of the features that I personally look for. I don't use Yahoo at all and only use AIM to talk to my mother if I can't get her on the phone.

Trillian could be good if I didn't have to give up so much of ICQ's functionality including my contact list.

Trillian is pretty easy to use, I personally like it.
You dont have a trillian account (unlike Jabber). Trillian is just a gateway to all the different programs, so when you talk to someone on MSN, you would be using your MSN account, on ICQ it would be with your ICQ account and so on.

I attached a screenshot, it'll appear in a short while.

Wayne - you can import your ICQ contact list into Trillian, even 2002a.

Also - what I LOVE about Trillian is the fact it now has message history for all the IM's, even AIM/YAHOO/MSN... So it now saves everything.
