    Opinions of 1and1.com?

Not interested in reseller plans or any of that - strictly as a site for domain purchase and personal site hosting. I have them and am becoming very unsatisfied and looking for alternatives.

I've been using surpasshosting.com for a few years. They have very reasonable prices, have excellent uptime, and great support.

A number of fellow techs I know use them as well, and are quite satisfied (that includes a mix of shared hosting and dedicated reseller hosting)

This doesn't really answer the main idea - which was opinions of 1and1. On the other hand - based on a 12 month contract - the price is essentially the same as 1and1 and doesn't offer as much.

Their page appears to be directed more at developers - which I am not.

    Why are you unsatisfied?

From my (yet short) experience with them, I find them to be quite decent at what they do. You could definitely end up getting much worse service from some of their more or less direct competitors.

I thought you were asking about alternatives since you weren't satisfied with 1and1.

For surpass, yes, they do have some plans geared towards developers, but most are not.

So, yes, probably the big question you should answer here is what elements of 1and1 are you not satisfied with?

Constantly having my server break down, ridiculous times waiting for FTP to connect and read remote list, excessive time for graphics stored at domain to appear on websites/blog as compared to first year of hosting, increasing cost while services not increased, webmail function sucks, non-responsive to complaints, etc.

    Is that enough?

That was part of it, but not the primary focus. I was wondering if this was an isolated experience of mine or whether others were also having problems.

If they have support forums I suppose you will be able to find more information there. So good luck with your search

I suppose you will be able to find web hosting alternatives to your existing account. I suppose you need to understand what you are looking for. Place requests on the right places and soon you will start getting offers. Also run your own search.
There are a lot of web hosts and that is big problem to find the right one
