If you are a complete newbie, I'd suggest your first book should be one that teaches you HTML and CSS ;-)

Oncer you learn the basic and want to create dynamic sites, then I'd go with the php book. The CSS 101 Tips and trick is a good one, but again, some basic knowledge of CSS would be ideal.

That would be my recommendation anyway :-)

    Hello w3newbie,

Here is a link to where the Sitepoint publishers have provided a book matrix which provides the answer to the question you asked.

I think we should first hands-on, and then books, lessons learned.

I just read sexy web design and its a great book for outlining the steps and techniques that one of the industries top designers uses when he begins a design... it covers everything from your first step to final design before you begin coding....

I would recommend this book to start as this is how you start a web project
