Hi, I'm new to web design and css and just completed the "Build Your Own Web Site The Right Way Using HTML & CSS" book. When beginning the site design and looking for backgrounds/images to use for headers, etc where is the best place to get these? I viewed the CSS Zen Garden web site and it's awesome. I'm hoping there's a commonly used site where one can go to download and use these. Thank you in advance!!

    woops, backgrounds and "gifs"

GIF & background repositories are probably less popular nowadays than the used to be in the 90's.

For quite nice backgrounds, patterns and borders , you can check http://www.theinspirationgallery.com

PS. I've edited the title of your thread (gifts -> gifs)

I would disagree, high resolution backgrounds and tiles are as popular as ever, especially with the rise in broadband. I see websites pop up all the time which use heavy background usage and tiles for grungy looks or to contrast visuals. Though GIF usage is obviously down due to its limitations in color and transparency.

PS: http://www.sxc.hu/ is a great place for free images that are royalty free.

I came across Fotolia the other day, doing work for a client. Nice images that are pretty cheap as far as stock images go.
