301s To Correct Internal Links - OK or not

A client has rewritten all of his sites internal URLs to make them more user friendly and setup 301s to deal with links to the old URLs. All internal links are still using the old - pre-rewritten URLs and therefore rely upon the 301 redirects. My question is - is this OK and if not, what are the implications?

Xenu is reporting thousands of 301s for this site.

    301's are fine...

    302's are not
    404's are not
    5xx's are not

301 Permanent Redirects are a fact of life on teh interwebs - it's the only way to manage change.

Just remember to try to keep the .htaccess file as small as possible since it has to be processed in its entirety for each request and big .htaccess files (more than a handful of lines) can slow the loading of pages quite significantly.

    See this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70LR8H8pn1M

Matt Cutts says that CURRENTLY 301 pass pagerank and anchor text, but probably not all of it. Now it works but you can't be sure about that in the future.Plus from the point of view of a developer i could say that this will create extra overhead on bandwidth and cpu of your server.

If i was you i would definetly changed that.
