Mail using sockets vs php mail function

Is there any advantage of using sockets to send mail in php over using the php mail function. I am writing a script to handle very many emails and have no way of testing it.

My understanding is you can get better error feedback and sockets can be faster for big mail outs.

The downside though is you have to configure your script to know what your server's setting are, which can make extra work if you move servers or it's open source / for sale code.

I wanted to make the software open source.I used sockets because of its advantage for bulk mail. I do not know how to test this but I would love to test performance on about 5,000 emails and compare both approaches but well ...
