PostgreSQL hosting and more ?

just got a few questions here..

1. does anybody have any good links to paid hosting (virtual hosting, not dedicated) which supports postgresql ?

2. what other GUI's is there for PostgreSQL, other than PGADMIN ? and are they worthwhile looking into ?

Hey,

My main reason for using PostgreSQL instead of MySQL is the fact that PostgreSQL doesn't lock the table when performing an UPDATE as MySQL does.

Also, second reason is that MySQL isn't relational. Queing on MySQL is also worse than on PostgreSQL

everybody isn't using MySQL - a lot of people are using it..My thought is that those that use it doesn't care for it's disadvantages or are ignorant of them.

Also, phpMyAdmin is webbased...can't get any easier to set up whereas PGADMIN is client sided - requires a lot more work to setup and configure IF you wanted to use it as the prefered gui/db admin as a host.

PGADMIN unfortunately also has a few bugs in it (which you learn to live with or work around) - it's a compiled program written in VB (yeah don't ask me why) and sometimes freaks out a bit (i can't run PGADMIN II on this machine for some reason). but once up and running it's a hell of a lot better way to manage your system

Probably because mySQL runs on both Windows and *nix, making it far easier for people with windows machines to play around with and develop for. The soul reason I haven't switched from mySQL to Postgres is that I don't have a Postgres development server (yet), whereas I can install mySQL on my windows desktop and play with it there.

i think i would prefer MySQL. especially 4.0, 4.1. check these pages in the MySQL manual that explains some differences:

Another reason is that MySQL is significantly faster than PostgreSQL. (According to PC World -- they say mySQL using InnoDB is nearly as fast as Oracle for most tasks.) This makes it attractive for ISPs (low CPU usage) which subsequenly determines what we need to use.

Well, I have to admit that i'm not sitting at the server and timing each db extraction/insertion on it but on a user level I haven't noticed any significant speed difference between the two dbs...none..nada...

and that's on both large and small jobs...but then again, i'm not sure i'll notice the extra pico second passing by while it inserts the data or something.

as long as it's faster than MS Access then i'm happy

For administration, I use phpPgAdmin... A phpMyAdmin port to Postgres....
Quite useful.

For the differences between the two... MySQL is faster than Postgres for single queries (personnaly tried that on my Sun SparcStation10). But when u need multi-threading db, Postgres quickly become faster. Postgres is the way to go when u have a lot of transactions to your db...

actually, MySQL is the multi-threaded one. Postgres is multi-process. (i knew what you meant, though. ) communicating between threads is much faster than between processes. this is part of the reason why MySQL is so fast. with multi-threading, though, the OS's thread library has to be good (Linux/Solaris).


BTW, one of the things that sounds nasty about Postgres to me, as mentioned in the link i posted above, is the need to VACUUM the database a lot? that doesn't sound very good to me (especially for something like a forum system). you don't really have to do much maintenance with MySQL.

I've used postgresql for quite some time now (commercially only though) for both large and small projects and I have yet to find a need to vacuum the db at all. we do regular backups of it but haven't had to vacuum it at all.

For any redundant data in the db we've written a small cron to take care of it when needed, though that's mainly happening on client request and not on a need-to-basis.
