    The pride rainbow has been used since the 70s and was popular quite a lot earlier than 98.

    But, there's a bit of an urban legend that suggests that the rainbow and apple was deliberately chosen as a homage to Alan Turing, who committed suicide with cyanide. Turing was gay and had been sentenced to undergo hormone treatment. It doesn't seem especially true though.

    There's actually a pretty good radio interview about the Apple logo on the designer's web site where he explains what went into the design.

    Yeah this was a pretty good interview. I like how he told about the industry changing from paper and markers to computers.
