    A question about social bookmarking

You see a lot of blogs with social bookmarking icons at the end of the post, such as Digg.

When you click these they always ask you to submit the story, rather than just give it a "thumbs up/vote"

Am I missing something here, surely the idea with having these icons at the end of your posts is to just get people to vote for your article already in Digg, and not have to make people go through the process of submitting your story only to find it is already listed.

Maybe Ive got it wrong, can someone explain?

There are Digg buttons that will bring you to the story if it exists, or to the submission page if it doesn't. It depends how intelligent the tool is. A simple link can't know whether the story is already there, and some of these services frown upon submitting your own site (so submitting it ahead of time might mean people are always "thumbing up" a story that has been marked to be auto-buried for self-promotion).

    ^ I Agree.

Yep, there are different kind of tools that we can put in our blog. I used to put that "digg button" on my blog but I recently replaced it with a twitter button (retweet button to be more exact)...

If the url already exists then you have to vote it but if the story doesnt exist then it will redirect to you submit it.And most people submit their sites to digg for faster voting

Two way of doing it. few icons are for just to vote. But today most of them using it as a blog advertising. If you click on the icon it will take you the respective site where you can add that article in their database. So you help the blogger in advertising it sites.

This is why I prefer Tweetmeme over the DIGG button. One click and people tweet it out to all of their followers.
