Thumbnail from flv file without ffmpeg?

I've done some googling on the subject, but have yet to find a definitive answer, but is it possible to create a thumbnail from an flv file without installing ffmpeg on my server?

My hosting company doesn't want me to use ffmpeg on my server. The videos I upload will already be in flv format so I don't need to convert the videos, only dynamically create a thumbnail from the flv file.

    Is it possible without ffmpeg?

In a round about and cumbersome way, yes.
    - in your video player actionscript, check for existence of a thumbnail for the relevant video
    - if it doesn't exist, use BitmapData.draw to save a bitmap, then compress and transfer this to the server
    - a server side script reconstitutes the bitmapdata to a jpg

The down side to this is that for every video the first ever viewer won't get a thumbnail.

Do a search on quasimondo.com for saving of bitmapdata for more info.

So, I decided to switch to a host that has ffmpeg on their server after all...

Ok, so I know in the title it says WITHOUT using ffmpeg.

    But,

I've tried googling all day to find a way to make thumbs from an flv file with ffmpeg. I'm finding a lot of results, but haven't been able to successfully get any of the examples I've tried to work.

Does anyone here know how to ouput thumbnails on the fly from an flv file with ffmpeg or ffmpeg-php?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance
