membership sites

My fingers are worn to the bone searching the we for info on building a membership web site. I've tried to educate myself, but have been incredibly unsuccessfull thus far.

How can you add username/password protection to a site? I need an interface that allows multiple users to self select different, individual usernames and passwords, checks to insure the entries don't duplicate previous members and logs the new members stats into a data base.

Site that I have found either require one common password for all users or require manual entry - neither of which are helpfull.

Of course I'd like to integrate this with automatic credit card payment plans and automatic renewal/expiration of the passwords.

Thanks everyone for your quick response to my question.

Is anyone able to point me to any tutorials / good books on the process of password
protecting webpages? About using .htpasswd or .nsconfig files?

I'm trying to get up to speed as fast as I can on the basics of starting a membership
site. I realize, frankly that it would be easier to hire someone to do this, but, at least for now have more time than money. Plus, I would like to keep control of the site rather than always having to throw more money (again, there's that money thing) at
someone whenever I want to change something.

There is no security in client-side authentication on the Internet. If you want a secure system you need a server side system.

Kind of late coming to this but the recommendation by echoweb or account manager is a very sound suggestion. I have used the lite version and found it to be a great script with two drawbacks.

1., the lite version is limited. I know, I know, buy the full version... i wish

2, found a rather large security problem with it, the file containing all the members emails, usernames, first names and most importantly, passwords. i don't know if this is just me and my set up but if it isn't then they have one hell of a problem. To test it set up the program on your server and go to www.yourdomain.com/accountmanager/amdata.db

Anyways, if it is only the case on my server then AM is a great program else....
