Questions wanted for SitePoint Podcast Interview of Jon Hicks

    Hey SitePointers,

On an upcoming episode of the SitePoint Podcast we will be interviewing Jon Hicks. Jon is the rockstar designer behind Opera 10’s user interface refresh. He also created the Firefox and Thunderbird logos and has designed for Mahalo.com.

We want to open up the floor for any on air questions that will be asked to Jon during the recording. Let us know what you want us to ask!

How does he think Opera (with a more elegant interface) should approach trying to gain more dominance against the likes of Firefox and Internet explorer (not really a graphic design question but as he's refreshed the UI, it would be interesting to see how he thinks they could use the new look)

What was the biggest challenge faced while redesigning Opera's UI?

Are there any more UI innovations to come in Opera 10? (apart from Tab previews and the address bar slider which we already know about)

Coming from a web background, how do you approach the discipline of OS application development. Whilst both have similar characteristics, they also have their fundamental differences.

Form, function, a beautiful blend of both/everything? Could you explain your views and your (thought) process behind the Opera redesign?

Have you had a go at re-designing the Opera logo? (unofficially of course)

I'm curious to hear Jon's thoughts on the differences between graphic design and interface design. Was there much of a change of mindset required when redesigning the browser chrome and the tweaks in interaction, compared with past experiences of designing web sites or logos?

I'd also like to hear what he misses about working as a salaried employee these days, compared to the previous lifestyle of freelancing for different clients with different challenges, and what benefits (personally and professionally) have come with the shift to working for Opera.

Final question: Jon has always been quite vocal in his "browser agnosticism". Has he curbed his propensity for experimenting with competing browsers since joining Opera, or does he just do it "on the sly" ?

    Look forward to the interview!
I design beautiful, usable interfaces. Oh, and I wrote a kids' book.

I’m speaking with Jon in a little over an hour, so I’m closing this thread down now.

Thanks for all the questions, folks!
