What does life mean to you???

I have been always thinking about what life mean to me,especially after severe 5.12 quake hit SiChuan province,my hometown,in China last year.More than eighty thousands people lost their lives and hundreds of thousands of victims and injuries lost their homes in disaster including many millionaires and billionaires.
However,i just can't make a conclusion that money is not the most important factor in one's common life since somethings money really can make a difference.Well, does much money really can buy happiness?Sometimes we are hardly to have both of them.Perhaps wealth means power,at least in China.I really have no idea about the relations of these factors, and do you think wealth can buy happiness or happiness can bring wealth? As for me,i don't think i can live a happy life without money, and to some extent,i feel that money can buy happiness.
Many people losing thier lives in disaster meant losing wealth at the same time,so you may take it for granted that wealth is not the quite important. It is very easy to ignore a point that the survivors in quake region need much money to reconstruct their new homes while suffering the unbearable pain of losing their family members.
For a lot of people, love always comes first in their lives. They'd rather pursue love than incline on wealth. But much more people in China focus more on wealth than love.It is very hard to find pure love now as it is always associated with wealth. It is undeniable that this is a quite realistic society.
Helping people is also another way i think i should most do in my life, which can bring you much, however, except money and power. It is very true that we don't care about what we maybe get after conducting good deeds and sometimes you may feel to find that conducting deeds means anything to you,but few common people can stick it out and do it consistently, since you can easily find there are sometings that means more when you are back in your daily life.
All in all, life is not a simlpe thing, for different person, life means different things. As for me,life means much to me,perhaps i just can't say which is more important than the other. How do you think about it,guys?

    wealth cannot buy happiness

happiness is totally unrelated to wealth

however, if you have already decided that you're going to be happy -- and anybody can make this decision, anybody -- then wealth might certainly enhance the experience

    • Only life makes the concept of value possible.
    • Without life there is no value such as love, joy, happiness.
    • Stillness is the antithesis of life, so being a human demands self generated goals and self-sustaining actions to reach the goals.

Money by itself does not create happiness, but earning the money does

Being happy is the main thing in life. The things that make me happy are my husbands smile when hes happy, friends gaining there goals, being healthy, still being able to use my mind for good and bad thoughts and the last paying the bills. I am lucky at the moment i still have all these things

    Yup.

And earning anything else too. Happiness is a side-effect of doing other things.

What is worthwhile? And if you achieve that worthwhile, does that not make you happy and full of joy?

If so, in the end happiness and joy are your goals…

The thing is, the concept of happiness (or what you think would make you happy) changes as you work through to achieve the happiness. Focusing on the process of doing something as means for happiness is a lot more convenient because you can be happy now, not then.

So, that would mean that you are a 100% altruist.

I am beginning to regret I've said anything, and I'll make sure to never ever respond to these kinds of threads again. Lesson learned.

No, I'm not an altruist, nor a dogooder. Attempting to be useful, wanting to accomplish something that could mean something to someone at some point in life doesn't make one an altruist. It'll give me a sense of satisfaction, and that goes back to the worthwile.

Sorry, but that is the definition especially since you said that you do not derive joy or happiness from this action.

I derive satisfaction from having done something worthwile (which is my ultimative goal). That is much more narcisstic than it is altruistic.

I'll switch to altruism when I'm done being selfish.

I think that you are missing an important point: To do something that is worthwhile must give you happiness, that is what happiness is by its very definition. If it is worthwhile to you it is creating joy within you. You can not escape that. You just do not use the right terms I think.

    And hurray for being selfish

Happiness = a state of well-being and contentment (Webster)

Okay, you call it happiness, I'll call it satisfaction for now. I'll get a sense of satisfaction that lasts for a few minutes before I completely deny it and look down on what seeemed like it was alright. So, the problem is, I'm never satisfied with the things I do. And the state of not being satisfied motivates me to try harder next time. And the next. And then the next. I might be doing something wrong.
