    Suspension of the 118800.co.uk

    The greatest scam has been suspended today after the mobile directory giant was scrambling for mobile phone numbers of individuals like you to be place free on their database. to remove your number from their database simple type capital "E" on you your mobile as send to the following number to 118800 to delete your from their system.

    Not really a great description there, but I get the general gist of it.

    Basically, 118800 sounds like a service which you send a text message to, in order to get directions, phone numbers, things like that.

    Bigger services include 118118, which allows you can use to ask ANYTHING - very useful for heated arguments!

    According to the OP, 118800 has been saving mobile numbers to a database and allowing the numbers to be accessed by text-advertising services (the text version of spam).

    Actually the problem was that the business took peoples mobile phone numbers without permission and then used them to cold call... and what made things worse it was not an opt-in service... it was opt-out because they essentially "baught out" the private directories which held everyones numbers. Or so as far as I can tell... so basically they gathered everyones cell phone details and then sold on the information to the highest bidder so that other businesses could phone you knowing who you are to sell you whatever they wanted... essentially telephone spam.
