OK guys I have just taken in my first even Mac! I have a unibody (early 2009) MacBook 2.0GHz Core2Duo, 2GB DDR3 RAM and a 160GB HDD.
Anyway, now down to the point of the post. I have been trying to get my Creative Fatality gaming Headset to work on it through a stander 3.5mm stereo jack. I would have though I could just plug it in and go, but it appear not to be detecting in in System preferences.
The Internal mic works fine, but the external does not. If I unplug it slowly the indicator suggests that it is picking up little bursts of sound, but nothing more.
I'm pretty sure your mic is not working, becuase it needs to be powered to work with the macbook's line-in. Is the attached earpiece working? If so, then I'm pretty sure this is your problem.
I had the same issue with an earlier macbook (the plastic one). Not sure if it's the same with the unibody mb.
