The Ashes 2009 - ie. The Might English Reclaim!

Yes, it's Ashes time again! The greatest Cricket Tournament in the world (as which, only the Aussies and the Poms of the board will understand), and looking at the first days play, man I thought the Aussies were going to hand it to us again, but by goodness we've batted well (rather you've bowled terribly, Hauritz couldn't threaten anybody even if he was bowling with a hand grenade).

So I'm predicting a fairly close series, but an ultimately English win, and they're coming home. What do you think will happen?

The first test should be a pretty good indicator of how both teams have settled in. So far its too close to call as the batting has been good from both and the bowling shabby at best.

Day 3 could see the England bowlers skittle the Aussies but TBH I can't see it happening.
I am cautiously going for a home win

Likewise. I feel that this test will probably be a draw (what day are we on? Day 3? Apparently it's going to rain all weekend).

Well done England getting out with a draw. Ricky Ponting your time is up!

Actually hoping England win the series as even though I'm a colonial I can't stand our friggin cricket team at the best of times.

Let me bump this thread with a hat tip to the English boys. Outplayed us is probably the understatement of the year.

The Aussies draw whist in a commanding position test one, then get thumped test two -- it's not looking good.

Bring back Gillie, Warnie and Pigeon for the last three!

Thanks for the hat tip Shayne, it was a corker of a match to say the least!
The next test is going to be huge for both teams - do or die for either.

Cheers for the hat tip. Was a stunning test from our perspective. Next test will be interesting as spikeZ says, at Edgebaston, where Freddie has had a lot of luck, so who knows.

Personally, I'll happily take a rubbish british summer and the next 30 days of rain! :P

Well that was an exciting series!

I'll be honest, I thought Australia were going to walk over us in the last test, but no, after a collapse of England proportions on Friday (one that had everybody in the office buzzing), England win the series 2-1.

Aussies to be fair played well, but neither team are looking brilliant at the moment, nevertheless, it feels good to win!

I've noticed a more muted response from the English camp in contrast to 2005. Hopefully we'll avoid a whitewash down under, and actually put up a decent defence next time around!

Yes a good test series for us, and a far more reserved celebration than Freddie in 2005!

    Possible but unlikely.

    Congratulations to England!

Unlike 2005, the teams were a lot balanced this time and hence I expected a close contest which proved to be right. I still rate 2005 Ashes as one of the best test series I have seen. It is a shame that Freddie has to retire due to the frequent injuries. There was a lot of test cricket left in that man.

About the series down under I expect England to give a good fight unlike the last time but that is still a long time away and a lot can happen during that time.

Yes, getting drunk before knee surgery probably wouldn't have helped. I'm sure Mrs. Flintoff did raise a few questions when he said that he'd be getting "legless" after the ashes

2005 was great but I dunno, part of me enjoyed the drama of the final test more. 1 - 1 going into it, Broady's demolishing of the Australian middle order, and the fact we bowled them out (which seemed a lot better than the "bad light stopped play" in 2005) made it a better final test. Whether it was better overall I'm not sure.

TBH: in 2 years (and yes it's a long way away), I'd be happy to give a good showing of ourselves. It'd be nice to win though, but we need to grow as a team, not make rash decisions & give players (such as Bopara) time to shine.
