Yep, two copies of Home Premium Upgrade. I know I'm going to buy 7, so might as well buy it now while it's on sale.

Have you tried looking it up? The Windows site, and almost every store that sells Windows 7 pre-orders has feature comparison charts.

No, I didn't look it up. I thought folks would be talking about stuff
like this on talkboards like this...

Comparison charts don't say much. Figured it would be better to try
and find a discussion by people that are/were beta testers.

Basically there's no reason to buy Ultimate unless you want drive encryption (BitLocker), and no reason to buy Professional unless you have special networking needs.

So what you'll see installed on computers in stores will be Home Premium, like it was for Vista.

I'm cool with Home Premium, though the last feature scares me a little, does this mean if I do not get ultimate, I cannot use the language of my choice?

The language feature of ultimate basically means...install a ton of different languages on a single machine and switch between them whenever. Otherwise is just stays at the language you originally bought it as. :P

Further more if you want to upgrade to a higher version, say from Home Premium, there is Windows Anytime Upgrade. Buy a new license/cd key and in less then 10 minutes your computer is upgraded. Don't even need the DVD! Every edition is already installed in that WinSxS folder.
    Logic without the fatal effects.

Yes, you will be stuck with Mandarin Chinese without
the option of switching to Simplified Chinese

Pay microsoft $$$$, you get license to use just about anything they make for development purposes. You also tend to get downloads of the new stuff before the rest of the world.

Looks like a good deal if upgrading from Vista, but if you're using XP (like I will be until there's absolutely no other option ) this could be expensive, especially when MS recommends a new PC for people to run Win7.

    From the Amazon product description:

All editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista qualify you to upgrade.
The testing in CNET and ZDNET reviews showed that 7 was faster than XP even on limited hardware. 7 will run on netbooks. It surprised me, but somehow they came a long way since Vista in terms of performance.

The minimum recommended system requirements on the box are 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM for 32-bit versions, 2GB RAM for 64-bit versions, and a DirectX 9 capable video card.

Doesn't that make you wonder if they could have been doing this all along?

And, when it come to OS security...why don't they simply leave that
    to third party vendors?

Why should I have to pay an annual fee to some other software company in order to safely use the OS I just spent a couple hundred bucks on?

No need for Windows 7 Professional, Home Premium is fine. So that means some will have legal copy and that extra copy <wink><wink>

Microsoft haven't been exactly clear on the backup differences between the Home Premium and Professional versions of Windows 7. Or at least the have managed to confuse me on the issue.

Am I right in thinking that if I want automatic backups performed to a home NAS then I need the Professional version?

    Hi all,

recently I bought Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit and I like it because it's not Vista (thanks God!). Even I already made tests of my favorite programs and they work properly. This system is fine and I'm a happy man

How did you buy and install it? Microsoft hasn't even stamped the DVDs to ship to stores in October.

At a half-price of 49.90 $ but this promotion already has finished. I installed this system easily, I have experience with this. Even I already installed some amazing programs like Mil Shield, Adobe Reader and AVG Antivirus for example.

Yes, until October but then the price will be double

Yes but that order won't ship until October. You wrote as if you already received it and installed your programs on it. Were you referring to the beta/RC?
