It sounds like something similar to what Nikola Tesla was experimenting with in the 1890s.
IIRC, from an article about the Nokia phone in a Swedish computer magazine the other day, they need to be able to generate about 50 W of power to charge the phone batteries. Currently the can achieve 3-5 mW, so they've still got a lot of development to do. It's an interesting technology, though.
