What I don't get is the fact that people thought signature links were a benefit to them... hasn't it already been shown that there is little SEO benefit in them? I don't see that the level of 'benefit' the users get from the forums has changed in any significant way.

10 years i have been posting on developer forums. It was only this forum that i found people taking advantage of forum signatures, and to some degree lol. It never occurred to me that there was any benefit to SEO. For me my signature was to my site for like minded people on the dev forums, nothing more.

They are when they are relevant as then you get real people following them.

What is that supposed to mean? Rudy makes extensive posts that answer people's questions. There are a lot of people posting in this thread who have a totally wrong understanding of the purpose of forum signatures and in many cases even beating them over the head with a tree trunk wouldn't get them to correct their misunderstanding. If it could then this thread would have ended long ago since it was all clearly explained by the bottom of the first page as to exactly what real effect the change would have.

    Well said, Stephen.

Given that this thread is now very old, and everything quite well explained already, it is time to shut up shop and move on.

Whether you see the change as a good thing or a bad thing is up to you individually. I know where I stand, and everyone has now had the oppertunity to say their piece.

Keeping this thread open just to chew over the same issue again and again is not productive and neither is it going to change our minds nor reverse the decision.
