Have you read the XHTML vs HTML FAQ?

XHTML is an application of XML, just like HTML is an application of SGML (in theory).

XHTML 1.0, in fact, is merely a reformulation of HTML 4.01 as an application of XML 1.0.

That means XHTML is XML, with a specified set of available element types and attributes.

Except for the fact that nobody serves their XHTML as XML.

But I shouldn't start up this debate again.

It's not feasible to serve your code as XHTML because half the market doesn't support it! (IE)
