Wordpress Specific Blog Question and Invalid Links

I have a whole lot of Wordpress blogs. Many using the same template. Today I'm looking at my Google Webmaster crawl stats and I come across an anomaly.

It says 845 URL's not found. Very odd. So I check the links and they all look like this:

Somehow something is inserting "extra" categories... 2 letter categories... the "ca" "de" "el" "es" part of the URL. If I remove this... the urls work fine.

Seems like an odd behavior... a tag or a plugin? I use the same template on other sites and this is not occurring.

I'm thinking this is attributable to the WP Spamfree plug in.

    Any ideas?

Those look like "languages" or "countries". eg.
    de - Germany
    es - Spain

Do you have some kind of i18n l10n plugin mucking things up?

You are Absolutely correct. It did not occur to me because I switched templates a few months ago, deleted the language translation plug in from the site, and the crawl stats in Google Webmaster are showing the problem as occurring in the past two weeks. So now I have to figure out where the code is buried as I deleted the plug in from the plugins directory. Yikes! It's also conflicting with WP Spamfree.

    Plug in Source:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/global-translator/

    # Search Engine Optimized: it uses the permalinks by adding the language code at the beginning of all your URI. For example the english version on www.domain.com/mycategory/mypost will be automatically transformed in www.domain.com/en/mycategory/mypost
It could also have something to do with this site being an old upgraded version of Wordpress vs. a new clean install on the other sites using the new template.

Thank You for bringing this to light. Now all I have to do is figure out how to fix it

I guess the good news is for people wanting to use this plug in... your site will be crawled by Google in those languages you select from the plug in.

    ------------- Update --------------------

I did a little more reading about the plug in and it uses a gt-cache folder that is not in the plug ins folder... so you must delete that folder as well. Appear to be back on track and only a couple frustrating hours lost.

I have the same problem today and my blog has generated more than 90 invalid links I found only in sitemap... The problem is, I cannot find this links so I cannot delete them..

here are some examples of my invalid links..

    http://www.mydomain.com/tag/loan-companies-poole/1e%20http://1e%20http://1e%20http://1c%20http://www.mydomain.com%202

    http://www.mydomain.com/tag/loan-companies-poole/1e%20http://1e%20http://1e%20http://www.mydomain.com

    http://www.mydomain.com/tag/lender-in-uk/1e%20http://www.mydomain.com

    http://www.mydomain.com/2009/06/19/f...hoice-finance/1c%20http://9aa%20http://1e%20http://www.mydomain.com

The bold part is what being generated...

I already checked all tags and pages inside my admin panel and I don't see any problem but my sitemap generator found them...

Wordpress support seems useless and has not been responding since yesterday with my post...

@ Jun Valasek :Actually, if they are appearing within your site map only, I think it's probably your site map generator that is at fault. I'd take a look at it within your plugins directory (deactivate it first) and see if that's the problem.

If the problem isn't there you'll need to find it by viewing the source of the bad page in your browser and then comparing the source to your wp-templates to find out where the error occurs. That can be a grueling process (I've done it!) but it will help you find the errors.

I don't think it's the site map generator... I am using this one http://www.freewarezoom.com/archives/sitemap-generator
I've been using this sitemap generator since early last year with more than 10 wordpress blogs and all of my blogs have the same plugins but this is the first time I encounter this kind of problem (in just one blog)... The problem is, I don't know what files or pages I need to checked... I already checked the source codes of the pages I am having error but I can't find these URLs..

In my given examples above, if you are going to remove that bold part, the links are working fine... Anyway, I am still checking everything and will try to disable all plugins as you suggested and will generate another sitemap.... thanks

If you disable all plugins, the thing to do is to then enable them one by one. You can also find the culprit (if there is one ) that way.
    Good luck!

I'm wondering if it's a WordPress 2.8 thing. I was going to download the plugin to take a look, but unfortunately it's an exe file (sorry, but I rarely do exe files).

Getting support can be iffy. If it's both WordPress core and plugin related, both camps may pass the buck back to the other.

It may be easier to use something else. To generate Google sitemap.xml files I've been using the Google XML Sitemaps plugin, and for the "page" sitemap I've been using the Dagon Design Sitemap Generator plugin. Both with no problems for me, although your permalink structure and possibly conflicting plugins may cause issues for you. But IMHO, it's worth a try.
