Only newer browsers (IE 5.5+, NS6+, Opera (?)) support PNG. Any browser which has the Flash plugin can view SWF files.

Yup, Adobe do a plugin for SVG. Unfortunately it's broken with the latest releases of Mozilla and NS6 (hopefully Adobe will release an updated version soon) but it works fine in IE. The Mozilla project are working on native SVG support but it won't be ready for quite a while.
