    new e-commerce site

    Hi all

    My first sitepoint post!

OK, so I'm at the planning stage of a website for a new startup company.
The site will be the primary shop-front for this business,
they will be selling women's clothing and accessories. At the
moment they have approx 300 items in stock.

I have programmed a few brochure websites with some simple PHP in the past. I have good photoshop skills also. I have a good bit of experience with Wordpress aswell but have never developed an ecommerce site using it.

At this point I'm wondering should I just plough ahead and use Wordpress or should I learn a CMS like Joomla which I gather is alot more powerful. I am concerned (and have read) that the Wordpress WP eCommerce plugin won't be able to cope with such a large volumne of products.
But then I am very familiar with Wordpress and am comfortable with it, unlike Joomla which I have never used.

From the customer's viewpoint, which option is going to be best for them in the longterm, when they are updating and running the site themselves?

    Any advice GREATLY appreciated

    Sue

I will go with WordPress. Joomla is a lot more powerful but it's more complicated to customize.

Anyway there are lots of plugins you can use to extend WP functionalities.

    WordPress is SEO friendly too.

For ecommerce site, I would prefer to use joomla for quality site. You can also use wordpress if you like.

hydra777 is right if you need some advance functionality but Joomla is complicated to customize. however Wordpress is easy to manage. There are 2 plugins for Wordpress

    1- WP-Ecommerce by instinct (popular)
2- WordPress Shopping Cart Plugin by tribulant

You can compare both in regards of features.

I think you should use Wordpress because you familiar with it . Joomla and virtuemart are good but it very complicated ,and its source code is hard to customize . I worked with both of joomla and wordpress ,and I think you can use wp-ecommerce plugin with a store has 1000 items or above . Wordpress is lighter than joomla and you can easy rewrite plugin ,themes,.. for website . In customer's viewpoint , wordpress is easy to use ,and site owner can easy update content for site
