    Dingbats - purpose?

I've been downloading fonts recently, and I am completely perplexed as to the purpose of dingbats. Would anyone be able to tell me their use/purpose?

Dingbats are extremely useful. You can use them for almost any kind of design element. The thing that makes them so useful is the fact that they are a font. If you just have a small gif image from online, it can be quite hard to customize the color or add effects. But with dingbats (which are basically small gif images within a font) you can completely customize them.

Swimm that sounds like a handy wee tip to know, can you expand on it a little?

Well its a pretty simple, but good tip. Since fonts are vector, you have access to sizable pictures at your fingertips (literally). With all the features of fonts, like swimm mentioned, you can change the color, the size, etc, and you don't have to separate the element from something else.

I particularly like the retro dingbats, they're very cool.

I sorta understand it, but not too clearly. Does anyone have any examples of dingbats being used?

Ummm... yeah... Look in the header at the tabs for the rest of SitePoint. The graphic symbols used are Dingbats.

Some of the most useful dingbats are those that come with Microsoft's Mini Pics series. I love 'em!

What font is that for the top header on SitePoint?

I *love* dingbats! I wrote an article here on SitePoint called "Designing Icons that Work!" which talks all about how to use dingbats as navigation icons.

The pawprints on my site, Pawsitronic are dingbats, as are the three icons on the far right.
