mysql import file

Just started using commandline and I'm curious...when you do an import of a dump file into a database, how does mysql know where on the server to look for the file? I mean you do this:

mysql database < file.sql 

and how does mysql know where to find file.sql. In the same vein, how do I SPECIFY where to find the sql file?

If you're not sure of your sites path on the server, just create a file and save it as phpinfo.php


Inside of it put this:

<? php
phpinfo();

?>

That will tell you all the info you need to know through PHP.
If you're on *nix your path may be /usr/localhost/sites/yourdomain.com
