EU is calling on US to free ICANN

Techfragments.com reported this week of the European Union requesting that the United States relinquish control over the ICANN corporation.

    From the article:
Viviane Reding, Information Society Commissioner of the European Union, is calling for the United States to hand over control of ICANN (Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers). She said that the organization running ICANN needs be one free of control by one single nation but controlled by a private entity and governed by multiple nations.
This is not the first time this has been requested. Should be interesting to see how the US responds.

Should be interesting to see Russia, China, and others want in on the action too. Change is not always a firm step forward. As for privatization... I'd be a bit worried about privatizing a monopoly.

I agree that privatization is definitely not the way to go. That would be worse than a single country controlling it.

Is there actually any genuine reason why things should change? As far as I am aware ICANN and IANA do a good job of managing IP, NS, DNS and TLD's
