    Advice for a complete newbie

I've never learnt any programming\scripting languages before, and being really sick of seeing so many websites that are either dynamic, PHP/MySQL driven or whatever, I've finally decided to invest the time in moving beyond my basic HTML knowledge.

So basically, I'm asking what you would recommend for a newbie to this all, should I begin with PHP, ASP, Perl? Any other advice?

    Regards,
    Sastan

I think here at Sitepoint, most people will recommend you to learn either PHP or ASP. I recommend you learn both You can learn PHP first since so many people here are willing to help you, and you mention mysql - somehow, I think mysql and php are made for each other.

I think PHP would be good as well, especially since I want to be able to modify my IBforum. Any good tutorial sites out there for newbies like me?

    Check out this valuable thread:http://www.sitepointforums.com/showt...threadid=18699

I think those at devshed.com are good ones for beginners. You can visit PHP forum here at sitepoint. It's a real big forum with friendly people.

If the only reason you need to learn a language is for your own sites then I agree with everyone else learn PHP. However if you have any plans to go into programming / development for other people then defintely learn a full language such as C++ / Java / C#.

The key word here is newbie

Dont mind what any of the previous people have said its all just a big sham

Learn Coldfusion its tag based like HTML and can do just about anything else the others can do.

The main disadvantage is Coldfusion isnt free but that doesnt matter since your not running your own servers (?)

Check out the Coldfusion forum for more info, but really if your just using this for your own sites it would make much more sense to learn it
