    Is Twitter a fad?

I don't mean to be a downer here, but does Twitter seem like a fad to you? For the majority of users there seems to be no point to Twitter except for meaningless rants about there life. Twitter has also found no way to monentize their content, when they have had ample time to do so. So does Twitter seem like it is going to fail? Post what you think.

It's a fad among the general population, but it's found real usage among many other groups. A service doesn't have to be adopted by everyone to be more than a fad.

Not monetizing the site is not the same as not knowing a way to monetize the site. This is a startup we're talking about, their investors wouldn't want them to start running ads that just cover costs. They want to build the userbase as large as possible then explore options for how to turn that into billions, not millions. There's no ROI on the investment otherwise.

Twitter is growing and they've entered the mainstream more the past few weeks than ever before. That's not a path to failure.

The same could be said for blogs just as well.

    Twitter is the next ICQ.

ICQ enjoyed huge success once, and has still not gone away, but there came a time when ICQ was no longer the latest innovation in instant messaging and new, different things were invented. Like Twitter.

Twitter will probably be acquired by someone like AOL Time Warner (well, probably not them ), and other companies like Google and Microsoft will probably start inventing their own alternatives to Twitter. But people who joined Twitter before Oprah will probably continue to have the same amount of geek cred as people with a 6-digit-or-less account number on ICQ.

It could be a fad but then I suppose the same was said about Facebook and MySpace when it was first introduced. Now look at them!!!

Then I guess blogspot, facebook, myspace and all those phone companies shouldn't exist.

It's a fad in that it is the "in" thing to do right now and I think unless Twitter evolve in some ways, other applications will take their concept and expand on it to make it even more useful... that said, I don't think Twitter is going anywhere anytime soon... and it's not a fad in that it's actually quite useful so it's not just "the thing to do" because everyone else is doing it, it's an awesome social media tool for business if used that way

So can I say yes and no?? ...too late :P

I think it will morph... most people drop out of twitter after the first month, because they don't understand the value. They see a bunch of people tweeting about stupid stuff like "sittin at a coffee shop" and feel it's a waste of time.

I think in a few years it will be more valuable as users and companies understand how to deliver information that is relevant or useful to their users. There certainly is value to a micro-feed for websites. Twitter as we know it today is likely not going to be the same though. It will just evolve... If it doesn't evolve it will eventually die.

Monetizing it all is just a matter of symantics. Someone will surely find a way to equate eyeballs to money.
