I'm in the process of monetizing, but really the best earning is the satisfaction of being able to put my ideas on the screen and seeing that sometimes they even make sense.

    1. I got into web design as a writer. I was writing movie reviews for a local newspaper, but I saw so much more potential in the web. Even as far back as 2000 I predicted the eventual demise of newspapers and paper publications. I don't experience Schadenfreude at the downfall of newspapers, but I do feel good that my prediction was right, and that training myself for a new career (web design) was the right call.

    2. I've met people through web design.

    3. I like the combination of artistic and technical challenges.

I look for happiness and self pleasure.
Awwww, how sweet.... Great for you if the web is your hobby but it's okay to use the web for business and be focused on it.

For me, every minute I spend online is for "business." Every website I make is somehow related to the 4 quadrants of my "business" which is 1) client projects, 2) workshops and training, 3) books and other self-made products, 4) affiliate programs.

If you don't have focus, you'll wind up wasting a lot of time with not a lot of return.

Considering that my primary site costs $8K each month to run, I definitely need to see some cash inflows from ad buys.

Sadly, those have been down of recent thanks to quarter one and economic fears.

To start, you need a quicker server. I tried to visit your site, which looks pretty good btw, and waited about 30 seconds for it to load. then tried to open a page, which took another 30 seconds. People don't come back after that.

Sorry for the quick review, but getting a quick server would help you get that 'mad traffic' you want.

Oh, and having the javascript that does not allow me to navigate away from your page makes me never come back to your site.

Money is not the only thing that we can earn from our website. We earn friends, associates and affiliates at the same time. It's a whole package that we usually meet along the way. By the way Affiliates could help you duplicate more traffic and doubles your earning too. If you need one PM me i have a good surprise for you.

I recently launched my site, although it's still a work in progress it feels good to know others enjoy something I've built from the ground up. I also love poetry so my site exposes me to others with a common interest.

For me, it is as more about:
    1) extending my technical skills (ie web development skills)
    2) extending my general knowledge of areas that I otherwise wouldn't be involved with, like Rocket Science !

Wow. Why so high? Does that include labor too or is it just costs of technology?

We have a dedicated fully managed server at Rackspace and we run almost 10TB of bandwidth monthly, and our costs aren't near that high.
