I've been learning Ruby and Rails for sometime now. Is there any way for me to get a Rails part-time / telecommute job, even unpaid? Idea is to get some experience before trying to get a full time Rails job.

I'm looking at both github and rubyforge. thank you for the links.
I guess there may be some internships somewhere, or maybe some "no pay but a percentage of the company instead" opportunities with start-ups. I myself don't know of any, but I haven't been looking.
Go for the open source, and build your own little apps to get some confidence about. It's expected from you to learn stuff by yourself and ask for a little help every now and then. Working on Open Source will pay off sooner or later, believe me.
Also, attend user group meetings and conferences near you, just one good contact that leads to contract will pay off for the conference fee.
Personally, I'd recommend getting web application experience. Your favourite development language may be Ruby, but you'll get more work if you are flexible enough to work with other languages such as PHP. And experience working with any web application will be good experience because many of the problems - and therefore the experience gained from dealing with them - are the same with any web application. Personally, I'd rather employ a developer who was regularly picking up PHP contracts and the occasional Rails contract, than one who had done a few Rails projects but was spending a lot of time being inactive.
