Looking at CMS that can handle this scenario

I am doing some research on various Content Management Systems that can be used in this unique scenario that a client of mine has.

They are working with a network of sites (around 30) that will have unique content contributors.

All of the sites will share the same templates, but need the flexibility, to serve different content.

Basically, the structure would be set up as this:

Main site: http://www.mainsite.com
Subsites: http://subsite1.mainsite.com, http://subsite2.mainsite.com, etc.

I came across Joomla and their Multi-Site (slave site) extension at http://www.jms2win.com/, but I can't seem to find a good tutorial on the site to see if this is what I need.

Any other ideas?

You could do it with wordpress, on a *nix system, symbolic links could avoid duplication of the subdirectories.

I seem to remember Drupal being able to do this.

The Joomla multi-site component is a great solution. We previously had a national non-profit organization using this component as a way to provide websites to each state chapter. Your best bet is to install the component and try it out yourself (as you said, there is very little documentation).
