Headaches with Catalyst ATI set up

I am having the problem that whenever i set my display properties to the way I want them they automatically go back to a lower resolution setting. Also, it insists on cloning the desktop which is not what i want. I want a second display with a completely different resolution setting from the desktop display.

I seem to recall in the past that I solved this problem with a third party driver other than the ones made by ATI. But i don't recall the name of the drivers.

there is a software called ultramon that could help you but i think its absolete. You just need to go to ccc and select the second monitor and select horizontal stretch (or something similar). then you can chose the refresh rate and resolution of the second display. if you select the clone mode then it just clones the first displays settings and you cant change them for the second one.
