I know that after you have been running a site for a while you will have some "clutter" after a while. For example, email boxes that are not used might be taking up a lot of space because they are getting spammed. Any advice on some easy things to do that will help save space and bandwidth?
(maybe an annual check up so to speak?)
Doing an audit of the e-mail accounts on the hosting account is probably a good idea. If an account is collecting e-mail and taking up space and no longer being checked, then you should ask the question of whether or not that e-mail account is really necessary any more, and delete it so that it does not continue to collect mail.
Do the same for your databases. Are there any that are set up that are no longer needed?
Also do the same for any scripts or applications you may have installed on your website. Perhaps you installed a forum script to test it out, but forgot to delete it.
I would also recommend checking to make sure all of the scripts and applications on your website are running the latest version. Subscribe to those scripts mailing lists or RSS feed so that you can be notified of any new updates.
You should also check all of the files in your public_html folder and make sure that they should be there. If you find a file and you are unsure of how it got there, then this may indicate a breach on your account some where. This may be difficult to do, if you are not specifically aware of what files should be on your account and if your account is very large, it may take some time to go through each and every file. But it is a good thing to do from time to time.
Once you have everything tidied up, you should make a full backup of your account and keep it in a safe location. This way you at least have a restore point to revert back to a known good and uncluttered version of your account should something ever happen to your account. This is especially true if you are not keeping routine backups of your account.
