How many geeks love to cook?
I don't cook a lot of things, but when it comes to outdoor cooking, I am pretty awesome. I don't mean to toot my own horn, but today I made some ribs in my smoker, and I don't think there are many restaurants that could come close to the flavor I've got going on.
I had marinated my ribs since last Tuesday, so they were pretty candied. I've got my own secret marinade, and just before they went in to the smoker, I rubbed brown sugar all over them. The brown sugar melts, drips, and caramelizes on the meat. They smoked for 4 hours between 150 and 200F, and then I put them on the barbeque with a little barbeque sauce. They only need to be on the barbeque for about 4 minutes, and they are done.
I guess if you don't like meat, you may not care about my luscious ribs, but I've never met a person that didn't love them. (I obviously don't know any vegetarians)
So, does anyone else here love to cook anything?

I do like to cook but I'm no good at it. Most I can pull off properly is an omelet or some grilled cheese sandwiches

I do like to cook but quite often it is the missus who ends up doing it after a hard day's work. My repertoaire is very narrow too...I make mean pizza, though. Nothing like a pizza to keep you going late at night in front of the computer

cooking a meal is cheaper than buying food from restaurants or fastfoods from where I am at that is why there is that need to cook meals on the daily basis. I ain't good at it but I guess it would just have to do...

I'/m pretty decent at experimental cooking, but I have to be in the mood. I hate receipes and having to follow them, I just find out how I like to use ingredients and prefer to mash something together.

Hmmm. cooking and baking. Some of my favorite things in life
I cook every day, sometimes simple and sometimes complex. I bake all the breads and cakes and such that we eat. Here is a little peek into what I tend to do: http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/album.php?albumid=20

My smoker is a Brinkmann, and it does have a water pan. It's got three 14" round racks. I modified it a bit. I drilled holes in the firepan, and cut the side to install an inspection door for the firepan. During this last set of ribs, I put ice water in the water pan. If it hadn't been for that, the temp would have been a little hotter, because it was a hot day, and I was using some weird charcoal I hadn't used before, and it seemed to burn hotter than the kingsford that I'm used to using. I got this Brinkmann smoker for free. I helped a friend move her dad's stuff from one house to another, and they gave me this smoker! I've had it for about 3 or 4 years. It's definitely taken some practice to use it. My first experience with the smoker was so bad, I just threw away the meat!

Water smokers are a nightmare to run, but hey the price was right.
That's what I like about my BGE, I can stabilize the temp at 225 or so and let it go unattended for hours without having to worry about it. I can even do that in middle of winter when it's 20 below and gale force winds.
Oh and as far as charcoal is concerned go to www.nakedwhiz.com for a comprehensive charcoal database.
