Java still the best for shopping carts?

I've been given the chance to bid for a project and it involves making a shopping cart. I have some experience with using java for this but frankly I found it slow and I'd like to know what you guys use nowadays. What's the hot new app for shopping carts now? We're looking into using mysql or sql for the database.

Do you mean client side Java, client side JavaScript or server side Java?

Personally I would use PHP and mySQL or PostgreSQL - the combination should be fast enough to handle pretty high traffic. The big question is how much traffic do you need to handle? If you're talking thousands of hits a minute then you need to look at a serious enterpise level with scalability to multiple servers - if you are only getting thousands of hits an hour then PHP/mySQL would handle things just fine.
