I think that is trhe question of the legacy first of all. If everything legal you can do the search for the VPS servers. I think that is what you need to get started from. At the same time several companies over there has narrow specialization and that might your way to go. You can do the search as for the java specialized as well as for the gamne servers.
    Good luck in any way

if you are just starting up, and your website does not has a lot of traffic, then, shared hosting should be good, in this case, i would recommend hostgator, upgrade to vps hosting or dedicated server if your website is receiving more users, or becoming slower than you would like, you can simply add more RAM if needed, or even use load balance the server to split the load across two servers.

I host my flash games site at bluehost, and I find that the bandwidth is more than sufficient. It all depends on your individual needs though of course.

You'd better ask particular company about possibility of the tests.
I agree on the very beginning you will be satisfied with the shared account but FYI once you become bigger you will need to move to the VPS or probably dedicated server

Adding to my previous comments, I would think that bluehost would be able to deal with 50,000-100,000 pageviews for the average games site, without too much trouble. I;m sure sure how it would cope under sudden burts though, if it reached the front page of digg for instance.
