    Exclamation Happy World Health Day

    Cheers!

    Today is World Health Day.

World Health Day is celebrated every year on April 7th. On this day around the globe, thousands of events mark the importance of health for productive and happy lives.

This year's theme is "Save lives. Make hospitals safe in emergencies". World Health Day 2009 focuses on the resilience and safety of health facilities and the health workers who treat those affected by emergencies. Events around the world will highlight successes, advocate for safe facility design and construction, and build momentum for widespread emergency preparedness.

    Points to Ponder:
We always assume that the hospitals/medical-centers are always there for us 24 hours a day, 365 days a year -- but it might not be the case, when we need it the most.
For example, during the 26 December 2004 tsunami, 30 of the 240 health clinics were destroyed in Aceh province, Indonesia and seriously damaged 77 others. In Sri Lanka, 92 health facilities were destroyed including 35 hospitals. In 2001 in Gujurat, India, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake destroyed 3812 health facilities. These are some examples of disaster situations where health services are affected and at times unavailable when they are most needed.

    Do You Know That ...
World Health Day was first celebrated in 1950.

Hmmm … I have a cold today, so it does not apply

What is it with all these awareness days. Maybe I should declare a day, like a day for thinking: How about April 15?

Guys, this year World Earth Day is about "Save lives. Make hospitals safe in emergencies"

    Stats:
    (1) Last year, more than 200 million people around the world were affected by disasters.
    (2) In large emergencies, such as those caused by earthquakes or floods, some countries have lost as much as 50% of their hospital capacity
    (3) Chengdu City, near the epicentre of the May 2008 earthquake: some 11 000 health facilities of all types were damaged or destroyed
    (4) 26 December 2004 tsunami, 30 of the 240 health clinics were destroyed in Aceh province, Indonesia and seriously damaged 77 others. In Sri Lanka, 92 health facilities were destroyed including 35 hospitals.
    (5) In 2001 in Gujurat, India, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake destroyed 3812 health facilities.
    (6) When a new hospital is built, construction specifically designed to withstand earthquakes and extreme weather events adds just 4% to the cost.
    (7) Experience in Latin America and the Caribbean shows that retrofitting a structurally sound facility will cost no more than 1% of the hospitalís budget, but will protect up to 90% of its value.

    hahahahaha

For real though, do we actually need a "health day" to decide to be healthy ?

How about we have a Shaun(OfTheDead) day, yeah ?... Come on people... start buying me presents. Canadian hot-dogs accepted.
