    Dedicated server & media

    Hey guys,

Don't have much experience with dedicated servers, Just wanted your opinions on this.

100Mbit Burstable Unmetered Dedicated Server #1
CPU - Pentium E5200 (dual core)
    Memory - 2GB RAM
Hard Disk Space - 300GB HDD

    $ 159 /month
I plan on hosting only media, (video files). Are these specs enough to support alot of people downloading?

Also, I've never setup this sort of server before - when I go to click on order now it asks me certain preferances.

Raid Controller, OS version, Operating system, Control Panel
There is quite a few options to choose from the drop down menu, I have no idea what they mean.

With dedicated server's is it the same as normal vps? Login, upload, Cpanel etc?
Or is there something else to it?

Just need to host media - nothing special.

    Thanks guys, appreciate it.

You haven't mentioned bandwidth in the server above. I believe that is the most important part and worth to be mentored if you are talking abour such kind of the content

According to the package, it's " 100Mbit Burstable Unmetered Dedicated Server "
I have no clue what that means, it's from FDC servers.

It means that they don't meter your usage, and the connection you get is 100mbit. The trouble is that you'll be sharing it with a good number of other servers. If everybody plans to push TBs upon TBs of data, you may find yourselves with really slow connections.

I see, what does Burstable mean by the way?

Hmm, 100mbit is good or.. ?

Also, I'm still quite confused about this part (Raid Controller, OS version, Operating system, Control Panel).

    Thanks for all the help

It means you can have bursts in usage of up to 100mbit. But that's in ideal conditions.

    Raid Controller
If you plain to use RAID, you'll need a controller. Software controllers exist, but are not recommended for server purposes AFAIK.

    OS version, Operating system
If you're familiar/prefer an OS, you can choose to have it installed. I suppose there's a limited array of offers as each data center has its preferences as well. Microsoft OSes come with a license fee.

    Control Panel
There are different control panel available like say cPanel, Plesk, Helm etc. amking it easy to create reseller accounts, end user accounts, setup email addresses etc. Each has its fans.

A server needs to be managed, so if you're not a server admin, either get a fully managed one, or hire the services of a company that specializes in such services.

That is an average price for such server. You may compare the similar deals from such companies as hostingsource.com - the dedicated servers of the same specs are cheaper but metered and also exmasters.com which have various unmetered dedicated specifications and are excellently suitable for media hosting, being adult host.

if you don't know too much about configuring a server, then , you could either use windows with plesk panel, or linux with cpanel, which you probably already familiar with.
