how do you do your menus?

Do you use a css menu generator, or use Dreamweaver's "insert > navigation bar" and load up the images accordingly? or do you code your menus by hand? (I'm trying to create a simple horizontal menu bar...)

I've tried both, and I'm experiencing problems on both ends. I like the idea of using graphics so I can control the appearance, but the code seems awfully messy. The menu generators look nice in dreamweaver, but once in live view or in a browser, the attributes and design qualities are gone, and the menu is just a bulleted list - it's like it's not seeing the external style sheet and I've tried coding it in manually.

    thanks for thoughts and opinions.

I always code menu's by hand, usually with an unordered list and usually with the suckerfish technique if producing dropdowns.

So do I - the code you get from any generator is almost always far messier than can be done by hand, at best it will be identical.

Always program everything by hand. I use unordered lists with anchors inside so hover effects work as intended in IE.. I like to code my own drop down menus. It takes longer but I feel I have a better understanding as a result and can more quickly fix/add items if needed without having to get my head around the code
