    Hosting Requirement for eCommerce

    Hello,

New to ecommerce sites. What kind of hosting requirements are needed for an online store site that handles credit card transactions? Will shared hosting be enough for this or do you need a dedicated server with a unique IP address?

Which hosting companies do a better job than others for ecommerce hosting?

    Thanks in advance!

    T-W,

If you are accepting credit card payments online, that's a huge leap into complex arena (there are legal requirements on you to protect the cc data that you collect so you'd better ensure it's encrypted - SSL - to the server then on to you. You can NOT leave the data on the server as it has NO protection (unless encrypted and the key is right there for anyone with access to use). Programs like OScommerce and ZenCart split the cc number and store one half encrypted for you to pick-up via httpS link (the other half along with the order details are e-mailed to you - in CLEAR TEXT format).

The best (safest) option it to use a payment gateway (e.g., services like PayPal or Authorize.net) which HAS the secure server and can receive into and pay FROM your account according to your instructions.

    Regards,

    DK

David, has that right....when you look at PCI compliance and accepting credit cards, it can be quite an undertaking for many small business owners. (Plus it can be rather confusing)

Here is a link that gives you an overview: http://www.websitemagazine.com/conte...ompliance.aspx

My suggestion would be to start with a gateway and pay a bit more in the processing fees, than to try and do it yourself. Remember, the fees can be added into your product costs and you only get charged when you sell.

    Good luck

I would recommend you another way to look at this point. I believe that you know about the the ecomerce solution you would like to install. I believe that you can do the search for their recommendations as developers
Just for you as another way to have a look at things.
