    Rotating Quote On Web Site

I'm creating a site for someone and she wants a rotating quote on the bottom, similar to what's on www dot heartoftibet dot com. Is this best done in Flash? Can I create it on the CSS? Or is there another, better/easier way? Thanks.

I've spent a bit of time looking around for ways to do something like this, and Flash is one strong option. There are also JavaScript rotators that perform a similar function. Six of one, half-dozen of another, I'd say, but I'd be interested to hear others' takes on the question.

The Tibet site you mention is quite nice, by the way.

I used to have a random quote cycler on one of my sites, it was done in php, calling a random one from a table each on page reload. One like the one at the Tibet site with graphics would probably be best done in flash.

I would stick with the flash if you can. I downloaded a bunch of JavaScript stuff on my site, a slideshow, etc... and left a bunch of crap on the HTML side that I had to go through and clean up. Just be careful.

Why on earth would you use a quote system which is solely around textual content to be done in flash, surely for the purposes of SEO and indexing the quotes (such as positive feedback, previous clients, etc) would be better suited if you used one of the many rotating content scripts in say jQuery (or custom JavaScript) and seeing how jQuery is a well established and compact framework you will not have to worry about any of the concerns provided by the above user.

I appreciate all of your feedback. My first thought was to use Flash, but jQuery sounds like it might be a better option. Can you recommend a book so I can teach myself? Thanks.

I have not read any books on jQuery however if you search Amazon for jQuery specific books I know there are a fair many and reading user submitted reviews may help with your choice. Thought it may be worth physically visiting a bookstore to have a look through the books to make sure it meets your reading style.

Good idea about going to the bookstore. Most of the time I buy computer/design books online and to paraphrase Forrest Gump's quote about a box of chocolates - even with good feedback, you still don't know what you're getting.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to explore both Flash and jQuery to see which works best for me.

We have a rotating quote on our site - we opted not to use flash, and we are pretty happy - check the source code at any of the links in my signature. The quotes are randomized and change at every new page.

Thanks for sharing DSFlyman. I like the way it looks, but I don't think I could sell that idea to her; she's pretty set on having the rotating quote.

You can also try Swift 3D, instead of Flash.

Swift 3D is flash, that is the format it exports too for the web.
