Wireless Networking with Ubuntu 8.10 Server

    Hi,

A few days ago a managed to aquire an old computer which I would like to use a a machine in order to get Server-side experience over the Home Wireless netowork.

Now, my question is (as I don't have X installed) how can I connect to a wireless network through the command line?

I no Ubuntu needs no drivers for my wireless card as it work out the box on Ubuntu Desktop 8.10 (and 8.04). I have tried every tutorial I could find online to do this and none have worked! Can someone help me do this please? Please not that I only really have experience with the Ubuntu GUI, although I can do a few things through the command line.

    Thanks
    Dan.

Well in reality one wouldn't connect a server to the network via wireless so its not surprise Ubuntu Server does not have that built in. I suppose you could install Ubuntu Desktop of the server...

    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
    Logic without the fatal effects.

Are you connected to the internet? You are going have to connect to your network with a wire. Even then you are going to need to just to get the wireless up and running.

Ok, that'll have to be a job for tomorrow, and it wont be fun. Annoyingly their is no working ethernet ports in my room, just a wire with neither a plug or a socket on the end. I'll try again tomorrow once I have moved the machine downstairs.

Tried to connect with a wire, and still no luck. I don't appear to be able to get online at all. Is their something I have to do that i'm missing?

Unlike the desktop version of Ubuntu, the server edition does not automatically adjust network settings unless setup to use DHCP. Otherwise you have to manually edit the network config file.
