    Are we Geeks/Nerds?

I read a post today that I thought was quite geeky (no offense intended), and then I thought, I wonder how well the average web designer/developer actually follows the geeky steriotype?

That question in its self could probably be considered quite geeky, but im interested to see what the results of this poll will be.

I only checked the one about fashion.
I don't hate sports, I'm just utterly disinterested.

Good point! Can you change "hate" to I'm disinterested then please? Hate is a strong word.

(or do I need to ask a moderator of this forum to do that?)

The only thing that fits is that I don't follow fashion, and I'm a girl.
Everything else you've listed doesn't interest me in the slightest. Perhaps that makes me a geek?

I'm definitely none of the above. Still, I do spend all day w/ computer because I need to get paid. Does watch movie online count as "I spend almost all my spare time on the computer", then count me in!!

Well, in terms of geekness, I do luv playing w/ tech gadgets and learning lastest way of programming.. I think this fits for a "geek"

I only checked I am disinterested in sports....I can enjoy playing, just don't see the point in watching. I considered star wars, but I just enjoyed the movies, I like movies...I'm not a "star wars fan" though. I think the whole geek/computers thing is just a stereotype, I have never been known as a geek/nerd.

i wanted to check "none of the above" because seriously, all of those geeky/nerdy attributes don't apply to me

and then i saw the "I dont care about or follow fashion" option, which is ~so~ true for me...

... which would invalidate my choice of "none of the above"

but then i decided to check them both

Since any time at the computer is not spare time for me, so I'll go with none of the above.

And yeah, I kind of have to follow fashion due to circumstances, good timing on that!

hahaha -- I do not care or follow fashion, but that only means that I have my very own and unique style. I love to be barefoot and very beachy, but I also love dressing in high style. I do not care about organized sports, I love science fiction movies. I spend a lot of time on the computer and in the books.

So I feel that I am a stylish geek, if that counts

Same here, I'd rather spend my money on travel, sports and other interesting things than fashion.

Uhm, does following fashion mean buying and wearing only the latest hyped up stuff? Oops, can't change my vote now though.

Fashion can be so very silly, and since geeks are not silly people really, they just do not even care. Geeks are people who live more within their minds, within themselves. They do not tend to express what they think through outward appearance much.

I'm a Star Trek fan (though I haven't watched it in years) with little interest in sports (except that I love to play soccer and hockey) or fashion, and I do spend most of my spare time on my computer. However, I don't think that qualifies me as a geek or nerd, as I'm hardly stupid, and I have lots of other interests.

Looking at it another way, the most famous geek/nerd on the planet has to be Bill Gates, and I'm the polar opposite of Gates in just about every way.

Of course, geek has various meanings. It can be a compliment - a word that simply describes someone who knows a lot about computers or software - though it is often used to describe one who knows about nothing BUT computers and software, especially if that person is also a nerd.

I don’t think that is an accurate portrayal of what makes up a geek or nerd to be honest, I qualify as a geek but I only could tick two of the options.

Star Wars fans are better than Star Trek fans.

And don't start groaning to me about Jarjar - I'm talking about the real Star Wars, son.

You sure? You're both really into computers, live in the Seattle metro area, into "doing good" in your spare time (you fight the evil M$, Gates fights AIDS), about the same age, male, and you both use tables for layout in your websites!

Bill Gates is into PRETENDING to do good. (You might want to ask some AIDS activists what they think of Gates' anti-AIDS crusade.)

Roughly half the people in the U.S. are males, most are the same age as millions of others, and countless people use tables for layout in websites. (I use tables on some of my websites, not on others.)

Yeah, OK, but you're hardly polar opposites. If you gave the guy a chance, you'd probably get on really well over a couple of beers.

Actually, you just proved my point: I'd love to meet Bill Gates, but he'd be terrified to meet me.
