The main issue is population, really. But no-one wants to talk about this sensitive issue because nobody wants to be told not to have children.

Yes, anyone that disagrees based on science should be jailed, right?

Why is it a growing majority of the scientific community that rejects
the claims that man is causing the earth to get warmer aren't allowed
    into the mainstream debate???

That's cause environmentalists don't like wearin EGG on their face!

Yes, I can see why the wackos would delete anything that disagrees
    with global warming.

You know, these same environmentalists were saying we were heading
into another ice age back in the 70s...I wish they'd make up their minds
about which event is going to kill us all

It's funny...mankind can't tell what the weather is going to do next
week, let alone in 30, 40, or 50 years when they claim the poo poo
    is gonna hit the fan.

I do think that you have not read the whole thread, otherwise you would realize where php_daemon stands as well.

Just try to curb your language a bit KM Richards, I am upset also that I can not say what I really think, but the rules on SitePoint are pretty strict. Rudy just happens to be on the other side of this issue.

    Take care -- Thank you

    You're mistaking FUSION for FISSION.

You're the only guy calling me an enviromentalist

I'm more of a scientist (well, that's the area I'm interested in the most). And I know that we aren't doing good to the planet.

I also know that in 1 second, the sun releases enough energy to fuel the USA for 9,000,000 years. That energy comes from nuclear fusion, which is a very powerful energy source indeed. Harnessing that would create ma-hoo-ssive amounts of energy; Obviously not as much as the sun produces considering its mass, but alot.

So, little waste (and that which is produced is safe after 50 years or so - compared with thousands of years for fission), massive supplies, no emissions.

Looking back at our current usage of fossil fuels, we seem to be stuck in the stone age.

In fact, I'm damn sure that this period of time will be looked back upon as the 'oil age' or the 'fossil fuel age'.

Quote a single scientific study made by a climatologist and published in a peer reviewed journal which states the current warming trend is not at all man-made.

There is no growing majority, there is only a growing minority of dissenters which are not climate scientists and have not published any peer-reviewed research to back up their claims. The latest dissent published in New York Times this week was the opinion of a particle physicist. And he even admits, despite claiming the current warming is within a range that could occur naturally (again, no published research, just a claim), that global warming is a problem the world should be dealing with... he just wants it prioritized lower than, say, poverty and disease.

It's a moot point, nuclear isn't going to happen even if everyone agreed on its safety

And it's not nice to insinuate that anyone who disagrees with you is a "wacko".

If anyone is a "wacko", it's those sticking their head in the sand and denying everything just because it's an easier option to live with.

It's interesting that where I work, at a secondary school, a few teachers did an informal survey and found that the children were by and large very pessimistic. There was an overwhelming sense of worry and concern over their futures, with many saying things like "what's the point, we're all screwed". I asked my tutor group whether they thought they'd want children in the future and even though they're only 16, a few of them said they weren't sure on the grounds that they wouldn't want to bring them up in a very unpleasant and dangerous environment. A worrying number of them have pretty bleak and apocalyptical outlooks for the future.

I certainly believe human activity is irreversibly damaging the Earth's natural environment, but I do also believe the media as well as the government's education plan are involved in unnecessary scaremongering and over-repetition of the same "bad news". The science syllabus is full of stuff on all the bad stuff we humans do, but at the expense of celebrating what was and still is wonderful on the planet.
