clients pc to have two-way comms with my server?

Hi,
I am trying to enable a feature like this:

1. user goes to page 1
2. enters data to search box
3. receives response 'wait a minute there may be an answer'
4. after a period of time, their page refreshes with a new update to the message, triggered by my server using (amongst other things), their IP address.

Can this be done as described or can anyone suggest a better solution, please.

to clarify: it has to be triggered by my server rather than as a page-refresh, so that multiple users are responded to, in order of who performed point 2 first.

You might want to explore "server push", I have no experience with using push technology so all I can suggest is to google it.
