I personally only use rel=nofollow on a client website when I am linking to a corporate / public web tool of some sort.

Big Mega Search Engines
W3C Validators
But anything else, I avoid rel=nofollow.
One way of interpreting the rel=nofollow would be:
"Hey Google, do NOT follow this link. It's NOT particularly interesting y'know ..."
